She is known for her intimate and strikingly candid portrayal of family life (Immediate Family), and two series of exquisite landscapes from the American South (Mother Land and Deep South). Her most recent work, a meditation on mortality, is entitled What Remains. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and three NEA fellowships. In 2001, Time magazine named her "America's Best Photographer." This photograph comes from Mann's early work and was shown in the 1980 Chrysler exhibition Not Fade Away. This exhibition featured five Virginia photographers: David Healey, Mark Power, Dale Quarterman, and David J. Levinson. Supported by a grant from the Virginia Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue. Three of her photographs are included in the Chrysler collection.
