DescriptionThis is a photogravure; originally part of CAMERA WORK.Label TextPaul Strand American, 1890–1976 New York, 1915 Photogravure published in Camera Work No. 48 (October 1916) Under the direction of artist-editor Alfred Stieglitz, contributors to the journal Camera Work deliberately created photographs in a distinctive and memorable style, helping advocate that photography should be regarded as a fine art. Possibly inspired by Cubist paintings, this image of a sidewalk on Wall Street features sharp light-dark contrasts and bold, geometric shapes. The pedestrians, with their long shadows, suggest that the pace of modern, urban life can transform city-dwellers into anonymous dots within a larger pattern. Museum purchase 89.146.2
