White began photographing in 1898 and soon became a widely known pictorial photographer. In 1907 he began teaching at Columbia University and in 1914 founded the Clarence H. White School of Photography in New York. Many of his students became well known photographers and are included in this exhibition; among them were Margaret Bourke White, Margaret Watkins, Dorothea Lange, and Paul Outerbridge.
