DescriptionThis is an unmounted albumen print; it is a typical Civil War photograph from a series that Roche made in the Petersburg area during and after the battle for that city. It depicts a street with the courthouse as the focal point; there is a cart on the street, and store buildings on each side of the street.Label TextThomas C. Goldsmith and Art Purchase Funds 93.19.6 Thomas Roche was primarily known for his Civil War photography. By 1862, he had become part of the photographic team of Anthony & Co., and was traveling with the Union Army. He was among the first to photograph in the occupied cities of Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia. Roche was a prolific maker of landscape views and spent much of the 1870s photographing throughout California and the South.
