DescriptionLithograph printed in color. Depicts the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac, fought March 9, 1862, at Hampton Roads near Norfolk, VA, showing a portion of the battleground apparently fought near Fortress Monroe. In the foreground is a Union Cavalry general with an Infantry staff, all on horse back except a captain in the right foreground, who is removing the saddle from his dying horse. On the shore, Union soldiers rescue Union sailors swimming ashore from a 36-gun sailing vessel. The sailors all have on their caps and look quite dry. A Black family pulls their boat to the beach and a Black man comes out of his burning shack. For the time of year, it does not seem to be cold. Painting is soiled in places and parts of edges torn and mussed.Label TextKurz and Allison, Chicago (Lithographers) Battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac Chromolithograph, 1889 Collection Chrysler Museum of Art, Gift of Mr. Louis I.
