DescriptionWine goblet of clear glass. Ovoid bowl with a thick stem decreasing in diameter with inner white threads and spirals on a plain conical foot. Bowl is decorated with faint diamond point stipple engraving of a portrait bust with banner above stating: "DE VICE ADMIRAAL J.A. ZOUTMAN". Poor quality metal. Many seeds. Rough pontil. Two small nicks on foot rim and one on top rim.

Label TextGoblet wih Portrait of Vice Admiral The Netherlands Zoutman Ca. 1781-90 Blown glass; diamond stipple engraved. Inscription: "De Vice Admiraal J.A. Zoutman" Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 72.46 Admiral Zoutman commanded the Dutch fleet at the Battle of Dogger Bank (August 5, 1781)- the only naval engagement of the Anglo-Dutch War of 1780-84. The battle was a draw, but Zoutman's forces were hailed as heros at home for having held their own against the Britsih navy. Zoutman's portrait was also engraved by David Wolff and the battle itself was commemorated on Chinese export porcelain.
