Not on viewLabel TextJohn Sloan American, 1871–1951 Daisy with a Duster, 1905 Oil on canvas Posing with her maid’s uniform and feather duster, this Irish American woman named Daisy is an unlikely subject for a formal portrait. John Sloan belonged to a group of New York painters (including William Glackens, Robert Henri, and George Luks) committed to sincere and candid portrayals of everyday life. As seen here, their work often used dark colors and coarse brushstrokes to complement the unrefined character of their working-class models. Compare Daisy’s unpolished features and attire with the elegantly clad female models in other paintings in this gallery. Sloan would have criticized those Impressionist pictures as beautiful but artificial. Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.702
