Label TextLandscape with Animals, ca. 1850 American Oil on canvas Gathered together with their animals, a simply dressed couple huddles beneath an imposing tree. Their harmonious group has found respite amidst a grand landscape, reminiscent of those found in the Rocky Mountains and the western United States. The painting’s complex symbolism such as the dove in the woman’s hand is not easily decoded but may allude to a number of biblical stories or the general themes of devotion and adoration.
