DescriptionThis is a photogravure; originally part of CAMERA WORK.Label TextEdward J. Steichen American (1879-1973) The Pool, ca. 1899 Photogravure from Camera Work, No. 2, April 1903 Museum purchase 89.103.2 Steichen was a painter and photographer, who, along with Alfred Stieglitz, became a founding member of the Photo-Secession group in 1903. His early Pictorialist work, often made at dusk or in moonlight, has an ethereal quality. Steichen, like Emerson before him, was interested in conveying the suggestive rather than descriptive qualities of the landscape, and he often manipulated the focus to soften his images.Exhibition History"The Old Order and The New: P.
