DescriptionThis is an oil on canvas depicting a landscape setting. A meadow traversed by a mauve path and enclosed by trees is shown here in bright, fauvist colors. Several figures appear to be working in the landscape.

Label TextOthon Friesz French, 1879–1949 Autumn Landscape, 1907 Oil on canvas This painting depicts the Normandy countryside, but its focus is the dazzling effect of saturated colors. Othon Friesz created his landscape under the influence of a group of painters, including Georges Braque and Henri Matisse, who were dubbed by critics Les Fauves, or “the wild beasts.” These artists embraced a shockingly bright palette and used pure color for its expressive and decorative potential with little regard for traditional realism.
