Othon Friesz created his landscape under the influence of a group of painters, including Georges Braque and Henri Matisse, who were dubbed by critics Les Fauves, or “the wild beasts.” These artists embraced a shockingly bright palette and used pure color for its expressive and decorative potential with little regard for traditional realism.
