DescriptionThis is a vertical seascape with a rocky, steep coast on the right. The sun appears radiant and birds are visible over the cliffs.Label TextConanicut, Rhode Island, ca. 1890s Ink on wove paper Richards delighted in the wild seascapes surrounding Newport, Rhode Island, but after several years he moved from the busy resort town to the neighboring island of Conanicut. He wrote to a friend in 1881, “Certainly there is no place more lovely than Conanicut in all the world, and that it would never be as fashionable as Newport would be much to recommend it.” His drawings and paintings of the area never included Newport’s famous mansions, but focused instead on the region’s natural beauty.
