There are a few rocks in the foreground; viewer is facing the crashing waves.Label TextWilliam Trost Richards American (1833-1905) Seascape Oil on panel Gift of Edith Ballinger Price 94.24.15 Crossing the Atlantic in 1867, Richards was impressed with the pictorial possibilities of the ocean. Thereafter, he turned his eye to marine subjects, bringing to seascapes the same intensity of focus and precise observation that he had lavished on American forests and pastures. His letters contain lengthy descriptions of weather, seasonal change, and the movement of water. This small oil painting was probably made after the mid-1880s, when Richards preferred oil over pencil for sketching outdoors.
