The floral ornament and many of the borders seem to have been derived from a color plate that appeared in Examples of Chinese Ornament, a book published by the English architect and designer Owen Jones in 1867. Thomas Woodall's personal sketchbook contains drawings of three additional Chinese borders that were incorporated into the design of this vase.
