Is this a landscape or shapes merging into one another? What the viewer is seeing is never clear in the work of Japanese American artist Taro Yamamoto, which was exactly his intent. His images reflect a desire for self-expression of emotions through movement and color. Yamamoto was interested in large blocks of color from art friends and mentors Jackson Pollock and Hans Hoffmann, who both worked in highly abstract styles. Throughout Yamamoto’s practice, he experimented with numerous designs and mediums, changing from oils to acrylics to watercolors. He had no preferred style or approach, because he wanted to explore the limits of all painting. Museum collection 0.5279
