DescriptionThis cyanotype print photograph was taken from an album of selected views of Virginia which was completed prior to 1893. The cyanotype photographs were taken in and around Hampton, VA, including views of the Hampton Institute and its buildings, Hampton Institute students and staff, portraits of the Institute's founder, Samuel Chapman Armstrong, children at Whittier School, rural blacks and their farms, views in and around Old Point Comfort, including ships and sailboats, the Dismal Swamp. The album contains 262 cyanotypes of various sizes to 6 1/4 x 8 inches. This album was probably made for personal use. Many of the prints are titled in an unidentified hand in pencil on the mount.
