Label TextGeorge Wesley Bellows American, 1882–1925 The Brook, 1909 Oil on canvas Bright blues and yellows give a brisk immediacy to the countryside near Zion, New Jersey, painted here on a cold January afternoon. George Bellows worked quickly with brush and palette knife to apply, blend, smear, and scratch through the colors, building up rough layers and textures throughout the canvas. For Bellows and other artists of this generation, landscape painting provided an alternative to the bustling world of Manhattan, another frequent subject in his work. Promised gift of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Batten Exhibition History"American Masterpieces from the Batten Collection," Gallery 220, Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Va., January 26 - July 31, 2011.
