Bright blues and yellows give a brisk immediacy to the countryside near Zion, New Jersey, painted here on a cold January afternoon. George Bellows worked quickly with brush and palette knife to apply, blend, smear, and scratch through the colors, building up rough layers and textures throughout the canvas. For Bellows and other artists of this generation, landscape painting provided an alternative to the bustling world of Manhattan, another frequent subject in his work.
