Moran built his reputation by painting dramatic records of the mountains and waterfalls of the American West. He then traveled to Italy to renew his creative spirit. This painting is a hazy pastiche of Moran’s favorite memories of the unique island city, a destination equally inspiring for artists like the French Impressionists and for writers from Lord Byron to Henry James.
