Label TextPablo Picasso Spanish, 1881–1973 Study of Standing Nude, 1906–07 Ink on paper This is one of several preliminary studies that Pablo Picasso made for his revolutionary 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (below). By radically synthesizing a variety of formal influences—from African masks to the paintings of Paul Cézanne—in a single work, the painting brought Picasso to the threshold of Cubism. Here, the artist depicts a figure with its hands posed behind its head. The blunt, mask-like face and bold, thick contours anticipate the raw power of a finished female form. Gift of Walter P.
