The Little Creek-Cape Charles Ferry carried thousands of workers and their families to farms that supported what was known as “the Exchange,” one of the earliest farmers’ organizations in the United States. Every year, for six to eight weeks between June and July, the Eastern Shore of Virginia Produce Exchange marketed the region’s agricultural production. Jack Delano documented the migrant workers as they worked farm-to-farm and picked a variety of ripened crops.
