Modern and Contemporary
The Chrysler Museum’s collection of Modern and Contemporary art holds works from around the world, spanning 1945 to the present day. Highlights include exemplary holdings of Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, Color Field painting, geometric abstraction, and realism. Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. originally housed his collection at the Center Methodist Church in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the venue supported local and international contemporary artists. The Museum maintains his dedication to living artists, and includes many important works by Hampton Roads-based artists. Recently the Museum has focused on filling gaps within its holdings, including works by artists from the global south, and increasing the representation of women, artists of color, and mediums such as video and fiber.
