DescriptionOne of a pair of sconces. Each sconce holds a single candle. Reeded "S"-shaped arm terminating in stepped drip cup surmounted by an open work border formed of leafage; into this is set the candle socket of an urn shape decorated with stop fluting and fitted with a removable bobeche with matching open work border to the drip cut. The bracket arm fits into a socket centered on a shield-shaped fixture decorated with a ray design and fitted with a heavy metal screw to attach it to a wall. Sheffield sconces of this period are rare.Published ReferencesSeymour B. Wyler, THE BOOK OF SHEFFIELD PLATE INCLUDING VICTORIAN PLATE (NY: Bonanza Books, 1949), p. 155 for mark.
