Hungary, 1894-1985) Washington Square, January 9, 1954 Gelatin-silver print Museum Purchase 82.41 Kertész was one of the first photographic artists to fully avail himself of the small format camera. His work, including portraits, still lifes, reportage, and experimental abstractions, reflects a curiosity in and a passion for serendipitous moments in life. Although he was widely respected as an influence and a mentor in France, where he lived from 1925 to 1936, recognition in the United States was long delayed; publishers during the 1940s and 1950s considered his images too subtle and eloquent.
