Label TextPierre-Auguste Renoir French (1841-1919) Le Chapeau Épinglé (Hat Secured with a Pin), ca. 1898 Color lithograph on laid paper Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Steingold 83.828 Hat Secured with a Pin is one of Renoir's most beloved prints. In it he portrayed the thirteen-year old Julie Manet-daughter of painter Berthe Morisot and niece of Édouard Manet-with her cousin Jeanne Pontillon. Renoir first conceived this disarming genre image-two beautiful young girls assisting each other with their summer hats-in 1893, when he interpreted the subject in an oil sketch and in pastel. He quickly followed these with an etching of the subject, and in 1897 reproduced the image in lithographic form, issuing 200 impressions (fifty in sanguine, fifty in bistre, and 100 in black). One year later he printed a second edition of the popular lithograph, this time in color. The present work belongs to this edition of 200 impressions, each richly printed in eleven colors. Renoir devoted much of his art to childhood imagery and in his final years he made a specialty of young girls in fancy hats. He was fascinated most by the natural beauty and innocence of children. "Their mouths," he once said, "utter only those words which animals would speak if they could talk."
