Label TextStudio of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo Venetian, 1696-1770 Sketch for a Ceiling Decoration (Glorification of the Barbaro Family?), ca. 1750 Oil on canvas Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.709 ~ The interiors of Venice's palaces were often sumptuously decorated with grand ceiling paintings and murals depicting its noble past. In the 18th century, Giambattista Tiepolo, together with his sons, Giandomenico and Lorenzo, were the leading painting studio in Venice. They were responsible for executing major works for European nobility and private commissions for the Venetian elite. This studio sketch, which includes the seated personification of armored Valor crowned with laurel, is related to one of Giambattista Tiepolo's greatest ceiling canvases, a full-blown allegory celebrating the virtues of the Barbaro family, which now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
