Shiraoka's photographs exhibit a sensibility affected by American and French cultures; yet his strongest influences are the art and Zen philosophy of Japan. His images are typically dark, almost black, and require careful scrutiny by the viewer. The predominance of black makes his images ambiguous and ominous, while revealing a vitality and poetry of the captured landscapes. In 1988, Shiraoka had his first solo exhibition in the United States at the Chrysler. The collection includes 15 of his photographs.
