Label TextJohan Barthold Jongkind Dutch, active France, 1819–1891 Along the Ourcq, 1866 Oil on canvas The day is bright and the air is clear in this brilliant suburban landscape. Although Johan Barthold Jongkind probably painted this scene in his studio, he did so using sketches he had made on the banks of the Ourcq, a canal just outside of Paris. The resulting freshness and luminosity inspired budding Impressionists, including Claude Monet, who met the Dutch artist in 1862. “From that time on,” Monet wrote, “Jongkind was my real master, and it was to him that I owed the final education of my eye.” Gift of Walter P.
