DescriptionPen and brown ink with brown wash on white paper drawing. A man walking with a cane, looking at the viewer.Label TextGiambattista Tiepolo Italian (1696-1770) Man Walking with a Cane on Clouds Pen and brown ink, brown wash, on white laid paper Museum purchase 50.48.103 Painter, draughtsman, and engraver, the protean genius Tiepolo stood at the very pinnacle of the mid-18th-century Venetian school. The present drawing is one of many similar sheets by the artist depicting single figures on clouds seen in steep perspective from below. Tiepolo produced several of these drawings as preliminary studies for specific figures in ceiling frescoes. Most, however, like the sheet here, were created as part of a reserve of studies that could be tapped if ceiling decorations were undertaken by Tiepolo's busy studio.
