Richmond photographer Willie Anne Wright was one of the earliest to work seriously with pinhole photography. In pinhole photography, the camera has no lens and a piece of tape serves as the shutter. Wright has worked with pinhole cameras since 1972 and has made a diverse body of work; one of her most recent series is an extended portrait of Civil War re-enactors.
This photograph was made by placing a sheet of light-sensitive photographic paper in the camera, making an exposure on the paper, and developing the exposed piece of paper. The paper in the camera is the same piece of paper that is on view here. The photographic paper used in this process is named Cibachrome. It is specially formulated to allow the making of a positive print from a positive original - such as a 35mm slide. (In contrast to making a positive print from a negative.)
Willie Anne Wright has 23 of her photographs in the Chrysler collection.
