Label TextKilburn Brothers American Navy Yard, Washington, D.C., ca. 1865−70 Albumen print Lincoln frequently visited this military shipyard to meet with its commander, John A. Dahlgren (1809−1870). “The drive to the Navy Yard is one of my greatest pleasures,” he once told a friend. “When I am depressed, I like to talk with Dahlgren. I learn something of the preparations for defense, and I get from him consolation and courage.” The president took a carriage ride here with his wife on April 14, 1865, shortly before his fatal evening at Ford’s Theatre. Using a special viewing device, this stereocard gives a three-dimensional view of the ring of historic captured cannons that decorated the lawn outside the Commandant’s House.
