DescriptionMixed media painting; framed.Label TextArakawa Shusaku Japanese, 1936-2010 Untitled, 1963 Mixed media Though predominately white, this painting, which looks similar to an architectural drawing, shows small pops of yellow and blue color. Outlining a shaded window box are two pencil-drawn towers. The one on the right draws the eye downward. It resembles a thermometer with the lowest point—the bulb—in shades of blue. On the left, the cylindrical tube with a tall, rectangular topper draws the eye up. In the center is a bulbous form shaded by lines. Arakawa Shusaku’s practice included architecture, philosophy, literature, and science. His works were purposely vague, as he wanted viewers to complete the work in their minds, thus unknowingly becoming a collaborator. Shusaku often based his work on scientific principles, which he never explained to his audiences so that they could reach their own conclusions. Gift of Walter P.
