DescriptionThis is a gelatin silver print photograph.Label TextAnsel Adams American, 1902–1984 Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958 Gelatin silver print, ca. 1980 In the late 1930s, Adams developed the Zone System, a technique that helps photographers gauge the contrast of their subjects, determine appropriate exposure times, and anticipate the look of their final prints. In Aspens, Adams used the Zone System to enhance the harmony of the photograph, transforming an evenly-lit scene into a rhythmic composition in which the aspens at center seem to move forward from the darker edges. In Redwoods, Bull Creek Flat, seen to the right, Adams applied the system to create a rather different pattern in which the redwoods form a regular, fence-like barrier against the deep darkness of the forest.
