Both as a photographer and an advocate, Stieglitz was one of the most important figures in 20th-century photography and art in general. In his own work, as in Camera Work, the influential magazine he founded and edited from 1902 until 1917, Stieglitz concentrated first on the emulation of painterly effects, then evolved a clearer, less manipulative style in his portraits, urban studies, and landscapes. Considered "the father of modern photography," Stieglitz was instrumental in garnering acceptance for the medium.
