Label TextTosa School Japanese, ca. 1600-1699 Courtyard Scene Watercolor painting on paper This image may show an episode from a classic courtly poem. Unlike the pass=produced Ukiyo-e woodblock prints in this exhibition, this is a unique watercolor painting on paper, not a multiple. Tosa Yukihiro and his follower Tosa Mitsunobu founded a school for painting in Kyoto, working in a distinctly Japanese style that featured flat colors, simple outlines, and diagonal structures. This style, referred to as yamato-e, or "Japanese painting," was meant to be stylistically distinct from the Chinese-influenced Kano School of painting in Japan. Chinese art, especially exquisite Song-dynasty landscape paintings from centuries earlier, dominated elite taste. The development of a uniquely Japanese painting style was foundational to the Ukiyo-e woodblock print.
