DescriptionPrint of a man seated with a dish garden on a red pillow before him. Many of the background designs are free from outline.Label TextUtagawa Kunimitsu Japanese, 1769, active to 1825 Dawn of Spring Snow, right panel of triptych Woodblock print on paper Ukiyo-e were a popular art: inexpensive, stylistically innovative, and concerned with fashionable contemporary culture. The right brocades and scrolls in this sumptuous interior for this scene show an ideal pleasurable home. The framed landscape in the scene, by contrast, is in the Chinese style. The classic work of art would give its owner prestige and social standing far above that of the merchants who frequented the "floating world" in Edo, who were at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
