On viewLabel TextGiovan Filippo Criscuolo Italian, 1495–1584 Adoration of the Magi, ca. 1545 Oil on wood Criscuolo produced several versions of the Adoration of the Magi, depicted here. In the biblical story, three kings followed a star from the East to find Jesus and his family and present him with gifts. According to tradition, these Magi had come from the three known continents, Asia, Europe, and Africa. The bright colors, porcelain skin, and exaggerated poses and proportions are typical of Mannerism, a style that emerged in European art in about 1520, after the High Renaissance. Gift of Walter P.
