Label TextKenneth Harris (1904-1983) City Hall Avenue, 1950 Watercolor Collection Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk Newspapers' Art Trust Fund 51.45.19 This mid-20th century view of City Hall Avenue shows Norfolk's old City Hall (built ca. 1850); the domed building seen in the distance, now serves as the MacArthur Memorial. The irregular red brick building to the left was the City Market and Amory, and the orange brick building to the left of that was the Monticello Hotel, the grandest of Norfolk's early 20th-century hotels. Much of City Hall Avenue overlays Back Creek, which was gradually filled in , as seen in an 1895 photograph, that shows City Hall flanked by wharves. Exhibition HistorySoutheastern Circuit, Oct. 1952-April 1954. "Norfolk Story in Painting," exhibited at Norfolk Arena, Oct. 25-27, 1968, in catalogue. Dept. of Public Works Office, 11/1968-10/1977.
