DescriptionWatercolor painting of a woman reclined on a couch, playing a guitar. Sheet music is next to her on the couch.Label TextCharles George Copeland American, 1858–1945 Harmony, ca. 1900 Watercolor and graphite on board Watercolor exhibitions were popular in many cities during the late nineteenth century. Highly finished works, like this example by Charles George Copeland, often rivaled oil painting in the public’s esteem and attention. While the evocative title makes an obvious reference to the musical stylings of the guitar player, it might equally refer to the pleasing harmony of the vibrantly patterned textiles and the artist’s skillful deployment of color.
