InscribedSigned in pencil lower right: "John Taylor Arms - 1938" below plate and same on plate lower right on bottom line of design. Lower left in pencil: "Trial proof III - A I". Lower left of paper: "I" and stamped in black within a cartouche "Collection E John Taylor Arms". In pencil thru center at bottom: "One of three proofs (Trials I, II, III) of the First State of the plate, before the strip at the bottom was trimmed off. These three trials were the only proofs pulled from the plate in this state". At right of this the artist's cypher and "WT". Lower right corner of paper: "wt -"; upper right corner: "316". Paper watermarked "J Whatman" backwards up margin and into print at left.
