DescriptionSlaves harvesting rice.Label TextAnna Heyward Taylor American, 1879–1956 Harvesting Rice, 1937 Linoleum block print on rice paper Compare the delicate stalks of rice with the strong contours of the workers’ bodies in this print by South Carolina artist Anna Heyward Taylor. She was a leader of the vibrant Charleston Renaissance of the 1920s and ’30s, and many of her works depict Low Country agriculture. Similar heroic images of rural America were favorite subjects for Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood, and other printmakers whose work is on view on this wall. The Chrysler Museum has a small but fine selection of these Regionalist prints, mostly through gifts from local collectors. Gift of Mr. C.
