Label TextSaint Peter, 1400s French Polychromed limestone Christ chose Peter to lead his Church, and this sculpture provides the saint with features that highlight his exalted role. His regal robes and three-tiered crown remind us that Peter was venerated as the first pope, while the large key in his hand refers to Christ’s proclamation that “I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” thus transferring authority to Peter. Medieval sculptors often supplied symbols like these to help the faithful identify the figures they portrayed.
