Label TextAlfred Stieglitz American, 1864–1946 A Dirigible, 1910 Photogravure published in Camera Work No. 36 (October 1911) As a young art student, Georgia O’Keeffe admired the exhibitions of contemporary art organized by the photographer, dealer, and critic Alfred Stieglitz. In 1917 a mutual friend showed some of O’Keeffe’s drawings to Stieglitz, who immediately recognized her talent and mounted her first gallery show. They married in 1924, and Stieglitz continued to promote O’Keeffe as one of America’s leading modern artists until his death in 1946. This photograph of an early flying machine, with bright sunlight outlining the shapes of the clouds, reveals the sensitivity to the beauty of nature shared by this creative duo.
