One man plays a stand-up bass and another plays a trumpet.Label TextGandy Brodie American, 1925–1975 Young Musicians, 1958 Oil on canvas In Young Musicians, Gandy Brodie gives visual form to the sounds and rhythms of jazz. After studying dance with Martha Graham and learning about bepop and jazz from his friend Billie Holiday, Broadie turned to painting, creating works that emphasize movement and sound. As seen here, his heavy outlining and blocky spacing highlight the independence of each figure, while repeated marks and densely painted layers unify them, providing a vivid expression of improvised music.
