Label TextPaul Jenkins American (1923 - 2012) Pawnee, 1958 Oil on canvas, 86 x 73 1/2 in. Using only gravity and an ivory knife, Paul Jenkins controlled the flow of paint over an unstretched canvas. He maneuvered the medium into unexpected pools of marbleized colors, allowing the paint to merge and resist without the direct influence of gesture from the artist’s hand. This created a thick surface that, even when dry, suspended the fluid layers on top of the canvas surface. Jenkins referred to his works as “abstract phenomena.” He did not approach the canvas with any preconceived subject or final outcome; instead, he relied on his own spirituality to guide the process. He tried to convey the spirit of the painting, allowing viewers to generate their own meanings from it rather than providing them with a visual clue to specific answers. Gift of Walter P.
