Label TextPaul Strand American, 1890–1976 Mr. Bennett, Vermont, from Portfolio 3, 1944 Gelatin silver print “I like to photograph people who have strength and dignity in their faces, whatever life has done to them, it hasn’t destroyed them.” —Paul Strand Following a decade of working in film in Manhattan, Paul Strand made annual trips to Vermont from 1943 to 1946, seeking to capture the spirit of the rugged New England state. Here Mr. Bennett is pictured in front of a wooden cabin. The deep lines in his face divulge a lifetime of labor and survival. The confidence of Mr. Bennett’s intense look is matched by Strand’s own mastery of composition and tone, imparting in his subject a quiet heroism.
