Goldsmith Fund 87.331 Since taking his first photographs at the age of thirteen, Porter has become one of the most celebrated nature photographers of our time, and is credited with developing new methods of photographing wildlife. After pursuing a medical career, he turned his full attention to photography in 1939. In 1940, he began working in color in order to capture the subtleties of pigment in the plumage and leaves of his subjects. In 1979, Porter's images became the first color photographs to be shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
