America, 1882-1966) Wier's Close - Edinburgh from Camera Work, No. 15, July 1906 Photogravure Museum Purchase 89.115.1 Mostly known for his mid-career Cubist-inspired "Vortographs" (regarded as the first purely abstract photographs), Coburn was also a prolific portraitist and urban landscape photographer. He produced more than 40,000 gravure prints for his books. Coburn associated with both the English Pictorialist group, The Linked Ring, and Alfred Stieglitz' Photo Secession group in New York. Coburn was strongly affected by Whistler's paintings, Japanese rendering of tone and perspective, and the urban imagery of Stieglitz.
