InscribedInformation from the back of this pastel's backing paper: "He was the father of Harriott Godwin who was married to Dr. Thomas Wood Borland, the Great Grandfather of Thomas Roscius Borland. This pastel was done by James Sharples at Small Hopes Plantation, Nansemond County, VA in 1809. The father of the subject of this portrait was named Jeramiah also. He was the son of Thomas Godwin and Mary his wife. He was born November 22, 1727 in the said county. Thomas Roscius Borland was his Great Grandson. Thomas Godwin, the father of the above named, was also named Thomas and was speaker of the House of Burgesses in 1678. He was the Great, Great, Great, Great grandfather of Armistead, Ramsay, and Charles B. Borland and Carrie Borland Burroughs."
