Harry Mann photographed Virginia Beach and the North Carolina Outer Banks throughout the 1910s. Unlike his city work and documentary photography of buildings, these artistic images allowed freedom and creativity. He rarely dated these works, nor did he identify precisely where along this vast stretch of undeveloped coastline they were taken. Mann often returned to his favorite subjects, and he seems to have enjoyed the particular challenges of photographing moving water.
