DescriptionThis is a photograph depicting an empty bar. It was printed by Berenice Abbott.Label TextEugène Atget French (1857-1927) The Empty Bar, ca. 1900 Gelatin silver print Gift of Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. 71.2207.43 For more than three decades, pioneering photographer Eugène Atget made some 10,000 glass-plate negatives of just about anything in and around turn-of-the-century Paris. Atget was interested in recording everyday life and ordinary scenes. He sought to preserve the disappearing old Paris in photographs of neighborhoods and people working in trades that modern ways would soon eliminate. The result is a body of work that beautifully blends the realistic with the nostalgic.
