Label TextPortrait of Two Children, ca. 1835 American Oil on canvas Well-behaved, serious, and impeccably dressed, these two young sitters are pictured as adults in miniature. Likely depicting a sister and brother, such a portrait communicated the children’s upstanding character as well as the parents’ status and civility. In addition to their confident gaze and upright demeanor, the children hold a book and a driving whip, common attributes of proper education and skillfulness.
